Cycling Master Plan Adopted

After 18 months of community engagement, research and planning, City Council today adopted the City of Lethbridge's new Cycling Master Plan, which will guide future decision making on cycling infrastructure.

The vision of the Cycling Master Plan is to make cycling a realistic transportation option for all ages and abilities, contributing to a sustainable future for Lethbridge.

"We know cycling is important to our community," says Mayor Chris Spearman. "We've seen that in the strong participation and feedback from residents during the development of this plan."

The Master Plan takes into account feedback from a community telephone survey, stakeholder workshops (including consultation with local cycling organizations), community information sessions and pop-up engagements at the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College.  Information booths were also set up at community events such as Jane's Ride, Tour of Alberta and 100K Day and an online feedback forum.

From this community engagement and working with experts in the field, the Cycling Master Plan outlines a future cycling network including locations and types of bike paths/lanes across the city.

"Safety plays a big part in our plan going forward," says Councillor Bridget Mearns. "The Cycling Master Plan overlays important data, such as vehicle traffic and near misses or collisions, with public feedback to determine what the safest locations and path types would be for those areas."

The plan aligns with work currently underway to build the City's first bike boulevard along 7 Street South. More information on this project can be found at www.lethbridge.ca/7Avenue

Following the approval of the Cycling Master Plan, the City's next steps will include functional planning studies to finalize routes and infrastructure types, design and construction when funding is available. For more information on this project visit www.lethbridge.ca/cyclingplan
