Fall Leaf Collection

The annual Residential Fall Leaf Collection Program is happening again during the months of October and November. The program provides for two passes through residential neighborhoods to collect leaves in paper yard waste bags. It offers residents an opportunity to divert leaves from the waste stream as well as offers residents another choice for managing their leaves. Over three years, residents have diverted 275 tonnes of leaves from the landfill by using this composting program.
Only paper yard waste bags will be accepted for the Fall Leaf Collection Program as the leaves and the paper bags they are collected in will be composted. Paper bags are available for purchase at retail stores throughout Lethbridge.  An unlimited number of paper yard waste bags may be set out for collection. They should be placed at the same location as each household’s residential waste collection (ie. front or alley) but away from waste collection carts.  For those residents whose waste collection is in the front, the City asks that bags are placed where your property meets the sidewalk.  The filled paper bags must not exceed a weight limit of 10kg (25lbs) each.

The Residential Fall Leaf Collection schedule is as follows:

Waste Collection Day Leaf Collection Weeks
October November
Tuesday October 1st - 5th November 5th - 9th
Wednesday October 8th - 12th November 12th - 16th
Thursday October 15th - 19th November 19th - 23rd
Friday October 22nd - 26th November 26th - 30th

Bags must be set out for collection by 7 a.m. on Monday of residents’ leaf collection week to guarantee pick-up. However, pick-up may occur on any day during their leaf collection week. For more information on the Residential Fall Leaf Collection Program please call Public Operations at 320-3850 or click here.

There are a number of options for residents to manage their leaves in addition to the Residential Fall Leaf Collection Program.  Residents may choose to mulch their leaves, back yard compost them or take them to the Yard Waste Recycling Site located at the 700 block of 3rd Avenue North.
