Lots of lots to Habitat for Humanity

City Council has approved the sale of three lots in the Crossings neighbourhood for future Habitat for Humanity homes with the option to purchase three additional lots in the next phase of the Crossings development.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that engages volunteers to build homes with partner families in need. Habitat invites applications from low-income families from any ethnic, social, or religious background. Houses are built with partner families, using donations from corporations, churches, service clubs and individuals. The homes are then sold to the partner families at no profit and financed through a no-interest mortgage, usually for a 25 year term.

"Having a safe, secure house to come home to helps build healthy, happy families," says Mayor Chris Spearman. "We are extremely thankful to have Habitat for Humanity in our community to make this a reality for well deserving Lethbridge families."
Habitat for Humanity families are chosen based on their need, their ability to pay for their home and a willingness to be an active participant in the process. A partner family demonstrates this commitment by completing the required 500 hours of sweat equity (volunteer work and construction labor), working alongside other volunteers and qualified trades people, helping to build their own house and other Habitat houses, and working on related Habitat projects.

"Habitat for Humanity is doing great work in our community," says Councilor Liz Iwaskiw. "They are helping families get the hand up they need and will now have the space they require to continue this important initiative for years to come."

As part of its operating budget, the City of Lethbridge contributes annually to Habitat for Humanity for the purchase of lots. Since 2003 a total of $350,000 has been contributed to this important cause. In October 2010, City Council approved the sale of five lots to Habitat for Humanity at the west end of Temple Blvd. Since that time, these lots have been transformed to beautiful homes for five proud Lethbridge families.
