Renovations to picnic areas in Indian Battle Park were recently completed to enhance universal accessibility in one of Lethbridge's feature parks. With assistance from the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund, the City of Lethbridge upgraded six picnic areas adjacent to the Alberta Picnic Shelter to accommodate users of all abilities. New features for the sites include:
- Hard-surfaced sites connected to existing paved pathways
- Bright, contrasting colors for visual cues
- Wheelchair accessible picnic tables
- Upgraded fire pits with surrounding barrier curb
"Improving accessibility in our parks system is a high priority for the City. Partnering with Employment and Social Development Canada to make the sites available to residents of all abilities was a terrific opportunity," says Parks Manager Dave Ellis. "These picnic sites are great improvements to Indian Battle Park and wonderful opportunities for all residents to enjoy the river valley."
Funding from the City of Lethbridge and the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund helped to make this project a success.
