The City of Lethbridge is here to help with the annual Residential Fall Leaf Collection Program this October and November. Open burning of leaves and yard waste is prohibited in city liimits, and this program offers residents an opportunity to have their leaves collected from their home during the fall season. This program diverts leaves from the landfill by collecting bagged leaves and composting them. The City will be visiting each residential neighborhood at a scheduled time twice during this period.
Only paper yard waste bags are accepted for the Fall Leaf Collection Program because all leaves and bags will be composted. Paper yard waste bags are available for purchase at retail stores throughout Lethbridge. There is no limit on the number of bags which may be set out for collection, but filled paper bags must not exceed a weight limit of 10 kg (25 lb) each.
To guarantee pick-up, please have bags set out for collection by 7 a.m. on the Monday of residents' leaf collection week. Residents are asked to leave bags out for the rest of that week until collection crews visit their neighborhood. All bags should be placed in the same area as each household's waste collection (i.e. front or alley) but away from waste collection carts. Residents whose waste collection is in the front are asked to place leaf bags where their property meets the sidewalk.
The Residential Fall Leaf Collection schedule is as follows. If your garbage day is:
- Tuesday, put your leaf bags out on October 3 and October 31
- Wednesday, put your leaf bags out on October 10 and November 7
- Thursday, put your leaf bags out on October 17 and November 14
- Friday, put your leaf bags out on October 24 and November 21
Alternatively, residents may choose to mulch their leaves, back-yard compost them or take them to any of the three City of Lethbridge Yard Waste Recycling sites, which remain open until November 30.
