Fire Crews Respond West Lethbridge Apartment Fire

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, Lethbridge firefighters responded to a fire at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Highlands Blvd. W.

Two stations responded to the complex which is home to approximately 80 people in 45 units. The fire was determined to have started on the deck of a fourth floor unit. A neighbour spotted the fire and called 911. Crews arrived on scene and quickly contained the fire to the deck. Damage is estimated at $1000. This fire had the potential to be extremely dangerous. Hot dry weather conditions combined with the fact that fires starting outside of the building do not trigger the alarm systems cause extreme risk for property damage and public safety.

This is the second west Lethbridge apartment fire in just over two weeks. On July 11, 2017, Lethbridge firefighters from four stations responded to a fire at The Gardens at West Highlands on the 2600 block of Garry Drive West which caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind citizens that when extinguishing smoking materials, please ensure it is disposed in a non-combustible container filled with sand or water.

On July 27, the City of Lethbridge issued a city-wide fire ban due to dry hot weather.
