As the last of the summer performances wrap up at the Genevieve Yates Memorial Centre, the doors will close for several month to complete exciting theatre upgrades.
As of Tuesday, September 5, that facility will no longer be accessible to the public. It is expected to re-open in May 2018. Site renovations have been ongoing for several months, working around the still operational theatre space. The site now requires a complete closure for construction work in the theatre spaces.
Once completed, the Yates will offer increased performance capabilities and improve audience experience. The work includes upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, a fire sprinkler system, performance audio/visual systems, acoustic treatments, upgraded finishes like paint, flooring and ceilings, catwalk relocation, dressing room revisions, seating replacements and roof replacement. The enhancements will also support barrier free washroom upgrades, the addition of elevators, signage and a concrete floor under the auditorium.
The Yates ticket centre has been closed since April 29, and will remain closed until next spring. Ticket purchases or inquiries can still be made by calling (403) 329-7328, in-person at the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre (2510 Scenic Drive South) or online at http://www.enmaxcentre.ca.
In November 2016, City Council approved advancing improvements to the Yates Memorial Centre after receiving $3.5 million from the Federal government's Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. This funding allowed for work that was already planned to be done more quickly, including changes that will make the facility more accessible.
During the closure,
New West Theatre, one of the facilities biggest users, will perform at
alternative venues. For more information visit https://www.newwesttheatre.com.
