2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation.  Watch this page for information on celebrations taking place in the city of Lethbridge to mark this special occasion.

August

June 3rd - September 17th - Kiipaitapiiyssinnooni: Our way of Life & Our history.  This art work, created by Kainai High School students, reflects their identity and culture in the twenty-first century during Canada 150. On display in the hallways of the Galt Museum.


June 10th - October 9th - The Galts.  On display in the Galt Museum hallways, a chance to learn about the Galt family and their lasting impact on our city.


June 29th - August 11th - Shakespeare in the Park themes this year's play in 19th century Western Canada.  A  prize will be given to a contest winner for submitting a short story or song, depicting life in late 19th century Alberta.  Watch for details on their Facebook page, located here.


July 5th - August 30th - Dragon Boat Youth Programming - the Dragon Boat Association of Southern Alberta will be providing youth programming on Wednesday evenings, this year with a Canada 150 flare!  Join them at Henderson Lake.

12th  - Apple Fest - Join the Lethbridge Sustainable Living Association for their Apple Fest event and find out about 150 sustainable and green initiatives that you can do, and take home a tree to plant in your yard (while supplies last)


12th - The Dream Catchers - Canada 150 will be making a stop at Pioneer Park on the Exhibition Park grounds, as they tour Canada with their bilingual, family friendly dance musical.  Vendors, food trucks and more will be at this free event.  For details, click here.


13th - Free pool admission to the first 150 people at Westminster Public Outdoor Pool today


19th - SportFest 2017 is a great opportunity to find out about many local sports offerings, trying activities, and meeting the sports organizations.  Stop by here to get some more things checked off your #yqlchallenge list too! Watch this site for details.


22nd - 26th - Whoop Up Days celebrates Canada 150 with special concerts and a Canada 150 Pavilion that will feature information from local not for profits, as well as a free virtual reality experience.  Details on Whoop Up Days 2017 can be found here.

September

4th - Free admission to Galt Museum & Archives from 1-4:30 pm, as they unveil a statue of Elliott and Sir Alexander Galt, commemorating Sir Alexander's role as a Father of Confederation.  Visit this page for information.


16th - Love & Records will be featuring an Outdoor Art Gallery with some artists producing works about what Canada means to them.  Festival attendees can also participate. Watch for details on their website, here.
 


28th - The Debaters Live!  at the ENMAX Centre.  Come laugh as comedians go head to head at this fun event! For more information on this event, and The Canada 150 Series being offered throughout 2017, click here.



28th - Join SAIPA for the Citizen Walk About.  This year the walk will celebrate the history of the disability rights movement across Canada over the last 150 years.  The event will start at City Hall and end at Galt Gardens and everyone is invited to join the walk.  Details will be listed here

October

1st - Sealing Ceremony for the Time Capsule Selfie Project.  On the final day of Lethbridge Arts Days, Allied Arts Council will host a ceremony for the time capsule that will be sealed for 50 years.  More details tba.

25th - Lethbridge Registered Music Teacher's Student Recital, featuring the music of Canadian composters.  This event will be held at the Main Branch of the library in the Theatre Gallery at 2:30.  A silver collection will be taken.  Information can be found here.

29th - Sharing Dance Day Canada Planning session.  Join the Lethbridge Public Library at the main branch, from 2-3 pm, to learn about this nationwide dance-sharing initiative, spearheaded by Canada's National Ballet School.  SIgn up for the free 12 one hour sessions that begin in February. 1st - Winter Walk Day - everyone is welcome to attend this province-wide event.  Please meet at the front doors to Henderson Pool/the pool parking lot at 5 pm.  Canadian flags and bookmarks will be given out in celebration of Canada's 150th.  For more information, click here.  Record your participation after you walk, here.


 

7th - Black History Month: Viola Desmond Documentary Screening at the UofL, Turcotte Hall TH201 at 6 pm.  Come learn about this woman who will be featured on the new $10 bank note, and who nationally was noted as the face and story of Black History Month for 2017.  Event details are located here.


 

17th-18th - "Old Favourites" - a music and comedy revue featuring our favourite music selections from the 50s, 60s and 70s.  This year's show is a tribute to our favourite Canadian singers, songwriters in celebration of Canada's 150th Birthday.  A fundraiser for Nord-bridge Senior Citizens Centre. 20th - Premiere of a documentary:  "Lethbridge: A Tale of Two Galts"

21st - The Dream Catchers Workshop - taking place in Pincher Creek, this all day workshop is for youth aged 11-13 to share their vision for the country through music, video, art, etc.  To find out more about this experience, click here or contact Aaron at 613.231.3355 ext 233

1st - Student Speaker Challenge.  Join the ULSU, LPIRG, and SACPA as undergraduate students participate in a public speaking competition on the theme of Canadian Values.  This free event runs from 5-6:30 pm in the Students Union Ballroom at the UofL.  Details are located here.


 

3rd - Thinking Through Canada's 150th  -this free presentation by David Balzer, writer, editor, teacher, and cultural critic, will explore the problems and opportunities surrounding Canada's 150th anniversary.  W570, Recital Hall, University of Lethbridge.  Free.


 

4th - April 15th - Celebrating Canada. Lethbridge Photography Club members photos will be exhibited in the Concourse Gallery at Casa. Stop by to see this free exhibit, and attend the Exhibit Opening on March 4th at 7 pm.  Information and a list of photographers can be found here.


 

4th - Pretty, Witty & GAY Cabaret - enjoy songs by queer Canadian recording artists, and participate in communicating what it means to be queer and Canadian.  More details will be available here.


 

4th - Lethbridge Skating Club Annual Carnival - Out of this World.  Come watch the Lethbridge Skating Club celebrate the sesquicentennial with a special performance at their annual carnival taking place at Nicholas Sheran Arena.  Information on this event that is open to the public, can be found here.


 

7th - Greatness In Leadership - Inspiring Greatness....Celebrating Milestones, Differences Makers and Spirit of A Great Community - recognized as an official Canada 150 event by Heritage Canada.  Tickets available here.


 

9th-12th  - Proud, by Michael Healy, a presentation of Undertow Theatre Collective.  A comedy-satire, looking at Canadian government and one election in particular.  Location and tickets at Casa

5th-7th - Headwinds Cycling Club's annual Coulee Cruiser event will be celebrating the 150th lap of the Sunday's Alberta Cup Race, in recognition of Canada's 150th.  This event will also get you some #yqlchallenge activities! Check it out here.


10th - Lakeview Community Superhero Fun Run.  Celebrate Canada's 150th with a fun run/walk for all ages.  This timed 2 km and 5 km event encourages people to dress up as a Superhero.  Free capes while supplies last.  Register here.

10th - London Road Neighborhood Family Fair will be taking place at Kinsmen Park and will celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday with a Giant Birthday Party for Canada.  Bouncy castles, face painting and more - free for the community! This event take place from 1-4 pm and details will be located here.

16th - The Scarlet Ball is being held by the SOS Film Collective.   Enjoy a screening of "True Stories", a David Byrne film, and live music.  Details will be posted here.


17th - 4th Annual FUN DAY!  Senator Buchanan Neighborhood Association is pleased to host their annual Fun Day Festival for the community in celebration of Neighbor Day.  Canada Flags to the first 150 people and Maple Leaf tattoos!  Enjoy this Canada 150 themed event!  See here for details


17th - Join Upper Victoria Park Neighborhood Association as they celebrate Upper Victoria Park Neighbor Day Event.  Activities will be taking place along 7th Ave South and in the area including chalk artist drawings, Canadian flags and facepainting of such, and some live musicians playing some Canadian music throughout the day.


19th Indigenous Awareness Week Feast at the Galt Museum from 11:30-1:30 with free admission, dancing, friends and more!  Check out the Galt Museum's website for all the details.


19th - 23rd Landmark2017 at Fort Whoop-Up.  This Canada 150 projec brings together artists and curators collaborating with local communities, actively engaging audiences to critically examine Canada at 150 while offering a legacy for the future.  Information can be found here.


20th - World Refugee Day will be taking place in the Casa Rotary Plaza.  This free event will include a time capsule, resource booths, and more!  Everyone welcome!


21st - National Aboriginal Day will be celebrated at Fort Whoop-Up from 1-4:30 with free admission, story telling, mini pow wow, children's activities, and food! Details at the Fort Whoop-Up website.


23rd - St-Jean Baptiste Day is celebrated today in Lethbridge. This is a free family event and is bilingual, including a bilingual musical performance.  Details will be available at www.acfa.ab.ca/lethbridge

1st - Canada $1.50 Swim.  Westminster Outdoor Public Pool will be open today for a special $1.50 swim!  Enjoy a free bbq, birthday cake and more as they celebrate Canada's birthday (11am - noon Lane Swim | 12 pm - 7 pm Open Swim)


1st - Canada Day Dragon Boat Demonstrationsjoin the Dragon Boat Association of Southern Alberta as they provide demonstrations today at Henderson Lake.


1st - Lethbridge Bulls Baseball Canada Day Ball Games and Festivities.  Cheer on the Bulls Baseball team, participate in some Canada trivia and other games as they celebrate Canada's 150th.  Details and ticket information will be available here.

5th - 22nd - Homegrown - Canadian Artists, Canadian Music Join the talented cast of New West Theatre as they take you through this Canadian themed revue show.  Information will be found here.


5th - August 30th - Dragon Boat Youth Programming - the Dragon Boat Association of Southern Alberta will be providing youth programming on Wednesday evenings, this year with a Canada 150 flare!  Join them at Henderson Lake. 


8th - Canadian Coasters 50th Anniversary Tour.  Watch for these classic cars on their tour across Canada.  Information and full schedule are here.


14th - The Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge & Area will be performing at the Japanese Garden event, and will be performing a dance called Wonderful Canada.  This free event will be located at Nikka Yuko Centennial Japanese Garden at approximately 11 am.


14th-15th -  A celebration of Nikka Yuko Centennial Japanese Garden's 50th birthday and Canada's 150th with Canada 150 Experience the Friendship.  Full details of this free, activity filled weekend, are here.


14th-16th - The Lethbridge International Air Show is excited to recognize Canada's 150th this year!  Details of the event will be available here.


15th - The City of Lethbridge in partnership with Saint-Laurent, Quebec will be recognizing the anniversary of 50 Years of Friendship, in conjunction with Canada’s 150th Birthday. We are celebrating with a family friendly event in Galt Gardens featuring local performances on stage and family friendly activities in the park. Details on Community Culture Craze can be found here.  Please note that there will be free admission to The Galt Museum, Fort Whoop Up, SAAG, and Japanese Garden on this day to celebrate.


15th - To Canada with Love Pavilion - the Canadian Mosaic Project, will be at Casa/Galt Gardens.  Check out this free exhibit all day today, before it continues the journey across Canada!  Follow this project here.
