Downtown Redevelopment Revitalization Fund - 2008 Year-end Report
Downtown Revitalization continues to be one of City Council's priority areas to which significant resources have been invested and are committed.
Many City departments participate in downtown revitalization whether through day-today maintenance or special projects. The Downtown Redevelopment Fund (DRF) funds special projects that have been approved directly by City Council, upon recommendations from the Downtown Redevelopment Streering Committee (which has now been replaced by the Heart of Our City Revitalization Committee).
For the last 2 years, projects that have been funded from the DRF have generally adhered to the “Downtown Experience Hierarchy” which directed spending on projects that, at the most basic level, would help make downtown cleaner and safer. At more advanced levels, projects enhanced the downtown experience through the addition of public art or activities that attracted people or contributed to the downtown experience
This report provides a summary of the status of Downtown Redevelopment Fund supported projects for 2008. These projects or activities have been completed, are currently underway or are scheduled to commence in 2009. Some other related projects are mentioned and a preview of what is coming up in 2009.
City Council is committed to providing Lethbridge with a healthy, vibrant, safe and beautiful Downtown that serves as its civic, cultural and economic centre. Council’s commitment is rooted in an understanding that a healthy downtown is critical to the City’s economic development, global competitiveness, quality of life and sense of identity and pride.
This commitment is demonstrated in Council's Working Together for Tomorrow strategic planning document. Downtown Revitalization is one of Council’s top three priorities. The project that embodies this revitalization effort is the Heart of Our City Master Plan.
We encourage you to spread the word about the Master Plan – building a great downtown takes an entire community!
