SHORTLISTING

Candidates are shortlisted based on the job requirements listed on the job postings.  Dependent upon the job requirements, testing may be utilized to assist in determining suitability. This may happen prior to the interview process.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

Candidates are contacted by telephone to schedule interviews.  The interviews are typically conducted by a panel of individuals that include the Department Supervisor and/or representative and a Human Resources representative.

The City of Lethbridge utilizes BDI or Behavior Descriptive Interviewing techniques.  The principle of BDI is that past behavior is a reasonable predictor of future behavior.  The interviewers ask candidates about their past behavior to assist in determining future performance.

In order to utilize this technique, candidates are asked to provide specific examples of the experiences they have that relate specifically to the job for which they are applying.  For example, candidates for a supervisory position may be asked to provide an example that related to coordinating and scheduling of staff, dealing with unhappy customers and developing written communication.  The job postings should provide a good snapshot of the skills required whereby you can build your list of skills and specific examples that you may be asked to provide.

Think about the position beforehand and think of examples where you have used the skills that the position requires. Remember, there are no trick questions in the interview. Interviewers are simply going to ask you about your past experiences. One of the interviewers' top goals is to get you to relax so they can be sure they are getting the best information possible on which to base their decision. One of the easiest ways for you to relax is to be prepared.
