H2Oil - Film Screening

End Date: Mar. 22, 2010 Contact:
Time: 7:00 p.m. Email Address:
Description:

Free Admission for this screening of the Canadian Film: H2Oil.  A discussion period will follow the film.

"Ever wonder where America gets most of its oil?  If you thought it was Saudi Arabia or Iraq you are wrong.  America's biggest oil supplier has quickly become Canada's oil sands.  Located under Alberta's pristine boreal forests, the process of oil sands extraction uses up to four barrles of fresh water to produce only one barrel of crude oil" - http://h2oildoc.com/home/

About the film:

It goes without saying that water - its depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination - has become the most important issue to face humanity in this century.  At the same time, the war for oil is well underway across the globe.  A struggle is increasingly being fought between water and oil, not only over them.

Alberta's oil sands are at the centre of this tension.  As the province rushes towards a large-scale extraction, the social, ecological and human impacts are hitting a crisis point.  In only a few short years the continent will be at a crisscross of pipelines, reaching from the Arctic all the way to the southern U.S.A., leaving toxic water basins the size of Lake Ontario and surface-mines as large as Florida.

H2Oil follows a voyage of discovery, heartbreak and politicization in the stories of those attempting to defend water in Alberta against tar sands expansion.  Unlikely alliances are built and lives are changed as they come up against the largest industrial project in human history.

The screening is co-sponsored by the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group, Lethbridge College Eco-Collective, Council of Canadians Lethbridge Chapter and the Lethbridge Public Library

Alberta Cancer Foundation presents an Evening with Reba

Lethbridge. . . The Alberta Cancer Foundation is pleased to announce that Reba McEntire is coming to Lethbridge’s ENMAX Centre for a special fundraising concert March 23, 2010 in celebration of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s 25th anniversary.

Reba will be joined by CCMA 2009 female artist of the year, Crystal Shawanda, and comedienne Melissa Peterman, who plays Barbara Jean on the hit Reba television series.

“Reba is a trailblazer and the perfect artist to help us celebrate 25 years of progress towards our vision of a cancer-free future,” says Linda Mickelson, Alberta Cancer Foundation CEO.

Patients at the Lethbridge Associate Cancer Centre are directly supported by the Alberta Cancer Foundation, says Mickelson, as is the community. “Discovery is the force behind our progress,” she says. “Our donors invest directly in research that drives better prevention, diagnosis and treatment, ultimately saving lives.”

Lethbridge was selected as a tour stop because it’s one of the Alberta cities slated to offer radiation therapy in the near future and one of the centres to benefit from the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s investment in radiation therapy research.

Areas surrounding Lethbridge will also have felt the impact of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s $11-million investment in digital mammography equipment for screening sites in Edmonton and Calgary and for two mobile units that bring state-of-the-art screening to some 25,000 rural Albertans each year.
