Much of Lethbridge’s leisure and recreation history centres around the Galt Gardens location in downtown Lethbridge. Galt Gardens has been a part of downtown Lethbridge since 1885 and was named after Elliott Torrance Galt, General Manager of the North Western Coal and Navigation Company Ltd. (NWC&N Co.) in 1909. It was the first park in Lethbridge and was originally called "The Square" and then "The Public Square". It was a ten-acre block that was originally used for baseball, lacrosse and cricket.
On January 31, 1906 a baseball game took place between Calgary and Lethbridge; Lethbridge won 13 - 1. It was reported that 800 people attended in what was considered to be California weather, in January.
