WATER UTILITY DOCUMENTS

Background

  • In the 70s, reservoirs were installed in northeast Lethbridge and west Lethbridge in order to meet the growing demands of an expanding city.
  • Fluoridation of the water supply was introduced in 1972.
  • In the 80s, a reservoir was built in the Uplands; as well, the west Lethbridge reservoir was doubled in size,
  • Replacement of cast-iron mains with PVC began in this time period and is still ongoing today.
  • In 1982, a new computerized water treatment plan (Plant No.3) was constructed in the river valley, directly south of Plant No. 2. Phase one and phase two were constructed concurrently and together are capable of producing 150,000 cubic meters of treated water per day.
  • The late 1990s witnessed the applications of new technologies in Lethbridge's water system, part of an ever-increasing effort to optimize the quality of the water and in so doing, reduce risk to public health.
  • Significant planning efforts also took place in the latter half of the last decade as the City of Lethbridge Water Utility prepared to enter the 21st century.
