Sign Applications

Development Permits are required for almost all types of signs in the City of Lethbridge.​ Signs are either permitted or discretionary uses in Commercial, Industrial, Urban Reserve or some Residential zoning districts.

To determine the zoning district for your parcel simply enter your address into our Lethbridge Interactive WebMAP and use the property information tool.  Once you have determined your zoning district, locate the corresponding sign rules for the district in Section 9.21 of Land Use Bylaw 5700.  This section contains detailed information on allowable zoning district locations, types, size maximums, heights, percentage of coverage and clearances for signs (except Portable and Billboard Signs).  Portable Sign information can be found in Bylaw 5240.  Billboard Sign Information can be found in Section 9.20 of Land Use Bylaw 5700. All fees relating to signs can be found in the Development Fees and Charges Bylaw.

The requirements for a Development Permit Application are:

Fascia Signs

1.   A completed Development Permit Application.
2.   1 complete sets of digital drawings showing:
    a.   All dimensions of the sign structure, including the height and projection of the signs attached to occupiable buildings.
    b.   The area of the copy face(s).
    c.   The design of the copy face.
    d.   The manner of all sign illumination and/or animation.
    e.   The type of construction and finish to be utilized.
    f.   The method of supporting or attaching the sign.


    3.   A completed Credit Card Authorization Form.

    Freestanding Signs

    1.   A completed Development Permit Application.
    2.   1 complete sets of digital drawings showing:

    a.   All dimensions of the sign structure, including the height and projection of the signs attached to occupiable buildings.
    b.   The area of the copy face(s).
    c.   The design of the copy face.
    d.   The manner of all sign illumination and/or animation.
    e.   The type of construction and finish to be utilized.
    f.   The method of supporting or attaching the sign.
    g.   A Site Plan showing:

    i.   The distance from the nearest parcel line(s).
    ii.   The distance from the nearest street, street intersection, traffic control devised and traffic signs.
    iii.   The distance from the nearest building(s), sign(s) and/or billboard(s) and on-site parking spaces and maneuvering aisles.

    3.   A completed Credit Card Authorization Form.​

    Canopy, Roof & Projecting Signs

    1.   A completed Development Permit Application.
    2.   2 complete sets of digital drawings showing:

    a.   All dimensions of the sign structure, including the height and projection of the signs attached to occupiable buildings.
    b.   The area of the copy face(s).
    c.   The design of the copy face.
    d.   The manner of all sign illumination and/or animation.
    e.   The type of construction and finish to be utilized.
    f.   The method of supporting or attaching the sign.
    g.   A copy of the roof plan of the building drawing showing the position of the sign on the roof of the building.


    3.   A completed Building Permit Application.
    4.   Drawings approved by an Engineer detailing:

    a.   How the sign will be anchored to the roof/structure.
    b.   The weight of the sign.
    c.   Proof that the roof can accommodate the weight of the sign.


    5.   A completed Credit Card Authorization Form.

    Portable Signs

    1.   A completed Portable Sign Application.
    2.   A completed Credit Card Authorization Form.​
