Masks or face coverings required at City facilities

Beginning Friday, August 7, 2020 non-medical masks or face coverings will be mandatory for all individuals visiting or working in publicly accessible spaces within City of Lethbridge owned and operated indoor facilities. This includes:

  • City Hall
  • Galt Museum
  • Fort Whoop Up
  • Helen Schuler Nature Centre
  • Lethbridge Regional Park 'n' Ride Transit Terminal
  • Lethbridge Airport Terminal
  • Lethbridge Public Library (Downtown and Crossings branches)
  • Ice arenas
  • Cemetery office

Use of mandatory masks or face coverings came into effect on August 4 for passengers using Lethbridge Transit.

In addition, the City is working with the facility operators in other City owned buildings to align with this direction. This includes locations such as swimming pools, Casa, Lethbridge Animal Shelter, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Multicultural Centre and the Cor Van Raay YMCA. The public will see some changes to masking requirements at these locations. Please check with the facilities for any changes prior to attending.

The World Health Organization (WHO), Chief Public Health Officer of Canada and the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Alberta continue to strongly recommend the wearing of face coverings to limit the spread of COVID-19 where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

The City of Lethbridge has a limited supply of disposable masks that will be available on buses and at City facilities if required but residents are asked to bring their own personal face covering with them if at all possible.

As per the Alberta Government recommendations, masks or face coverings should also be worn outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

City Council has directed the City Manager to look at legislation that directs the mandatory use of face coverings city-wide, should it be required. This draft bylaw will be provided to City Council on August 10 for consideration.
