Construction work is ongoing on 6 Avenue South and 10 Street South in front of the Civic Ice Centre to enhance pedestrian safety. Motorists should be aware that traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction. Weather permitting, the work is expected to finish by the middle of next week at which time all lanes will re-open.
The enhancements being made include the installation of flashing pedestrian lights as well as an extension of the curb called a bulb-out. A bulb-out extends the sidewalk to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and allows better sight lines for both pedestrians and approaching vehicles.
Due to the volume of traffic in this area, the lane closure stretches over a few blocks to accommodate merging vehicles. For safety, the speed limit has also been reduced to 30 km/hr when workers are present. A reminder to motorists that construction also continues on the new 7 Avenue bike boulevard adjacent to 6 Avenue. At this time, diverting around the construction to 7 Avenue is not a recommended detour.
