Arrangements Set for 2017 Municipal Election

Locations, dates and hours have been set for voting in the 2017 municipal election.

Election day will be Oct. 16, 2017, and City Council today approved the locations and hours for voting stations as well as dates and hours for advance voting, based on recommendations from the Returning Officer overseeing the local election.

A total of 14 neighbourhood polling stations around the city will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day. The ballot will include candidates for Lethbridge City Council as well as school board candidates for Lethbridge Public School District No. 51 and Lethbridge Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division No. 4. Votes of incapacitated electors will be taken at their homes on election day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Advance voting will be held during the same hours on Sept. 30 as well as Oct. 3, 7, 11 and 14. Locations for advance voting stations will include the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College. A mobile advance voting station will also be available Oct. 5 and 12 using a Lethbridge Transit bus.

"One of the fundamental responsibilities for every City Council is to ensure that all arrangements are in place for the election of the next City Council," said Mayor Chris Spearman. "A couple of noteworthy changes in the upcoming election will be the fact that for the first time, there will be advance voting stations on the university and college campuses as well as a mobile advance station."

Municipal elections are held every four years in Alberta, in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act. Anyone interested in running for mayor or city councillor must file an application with the local Returning Officer before accepting or allocating any funds towards an election campaign. This is an additional requirement of the Province since the last general election. Nomination day is Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.
