The City of Lethbridge Fire & Emergency Services Department would like to remind residents that the burning of yard waste such as leaves, twigs, brush and construction materials are not permitted within City limits. Only clean, untreated dry wood is permitted to be used in backyard fire pits.
There has been an increase in calls to Lethbridge Fire regarding illegal burning of yard waste in residential areas as the fall season is upon us. Residents are reminded that if they burn prohibited materials within city limits, a penalty of $150.00 may be levied under the Open Burn Bylaw 5858.
The City of Lethbridge does offer a free fall leaf collection program and accepts yard waste at the City yard waste sites. For more information on how you to dispose of fall yard waste visit: www.lethbridge.ca/fallleafcollection.
For more information on the use of backyard fire pits, residents are encouraged to contact the Fire Prevention office at 403-320-3811 or visit: www.lethbridge.ca/firepits.
