The City of Lethbridge Christmas Tree Collection Program will be held Saturday, January 14.
For the past 29 years, the City has partnered annually with a local youth group to ensure that Christmas trees continue to give after the holiday season. Since the program began, more than 80,000 Christmas trees have been diverted from the landfill and turned into environmentally-friendly mulch.
Christmas trees should be visible, stripped of all tinsel and decorations and out by 7 a.m. on January 14 to be collected. Christmas trees should be placed at the regular garbage collection location (front or alley), but away from the blue and black carts. Depending on weather and equipment, the collection may happen over a few of days.
The program is offered as a fundraising activity for local youth groups and is facilitated and supported by the City of Lethbridge. This year, the Lethbridge Volleyball Club will be doing the collection with family and volunteers to support their fundraising activities. Youth groups interested in participating in future collections are encouraged to contact Waste & Recycling Services to find out details on making a submission.
The collected Christmas trees are diverted from the City's landfill and are chipped for environmentally-friendly mulch. Mulch is available at no charge on a first-come basis when supply is available at Peenaquim Park in the parking lot adjacent to the dog park. Mulch is a useful addition to planting beds to reduce the need for watering and weeding.
If you are part of the Phase 1 Curbside Organics program and you miss the pick-up, your tree can be cut down and put into your green cart.
Christmas trees can also be composted at the Waste & Recycling Centre any time of the year. Residents can take advantage of the free Saturday program (free disposal for the first 250 kg every Saturday) to avoid tipping fees at the landfill.
