City asks residents to Look, Locate, Live when working around power lines

The City of Lethbridge has joined a provincial group to help further educate the public and spread awareness about how to live and work safely around electric powerlines.

The Joint Utility Safety Team (JUST) is a provincial consortium which was formed in 2005 by five major electric utilities in the province: AltaLink, FortisAlberta, ATCO, EPCOR and Enmax.

According to the group, three Albertans come into contact with a power line every day. Their messaging is aimed at first responders, males aged 18 to 50 who work with heavy equipment and those in the construction, agricultural, transportation and the oil and gas industry.

The three key electric safety messages are:

  • Where's the Line?
  • Stay 7 Metres Safe
  • Look, Locate, Live

Residents can find more information about electric safety at wherestheline.ca. The website includes guidelines on working safely around underground and overhead lines, tips on how to identify hazards and an interactive map which shows electric contact incidents across the province since January 2018.
