With the potential for rapid snow melt in the coming days due to warming temperatures, residents are encouraged to take note of several tips to help prevent flooding of basements or water pooling on neighbourhood streets.
- Make sure all downspouts are down and extend at least 2 metres (6 feet) away from your home's foundation. This will allow water to drain onto your lawn rather than overwhelming your foundation drain.
- Ensure that grading around your house directs water away from the foundation.
- Keep eavestroughs and downspouts clear of ice, leaves and other debris.
- If you have a sump pump or a backwater valve, check to ensure it is in good working order.
In your neighbourhood:
There is potential for ice buildup in storm drain catch basins along streets throughout the city. Public Operations crews are prepared to respond if these situations arise.
Residents may also look for opportunities to clear snow or ice away from catch basins in their neighbourhoods. Pooling water on streets or other concerns can be reported to Public Operations at 403-320-3850.
