This morning Lethbridge Public Communications Centre received multiple calls regarding the smell of gas throughout the city.
The source and location of the smell was found to be from a pipeline valve that had been dropped off for recycling, east of the city along Range Road 212.
This valve contained the chemical mercaptan, which is added to natural gas to give the gas its pungent odour for detection.
ATCO Gas were able to neutralize the chemical and valve component and residents are advised that the smell should subside over time. ATCO Gas has also inspected all sites surrounding the city with no further issues to report.
If residents are experiencing difficulty breathing and/or eye or skin irritation as a result of the smell, they are advised to seek medical attention as required.
Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Crews will continue to monitor and update of any changes.
