Grand Opening in celebration of Lethbridge’s new leisure centre

Dignitaries, construction and design staff, project partners and the public came together today to celebrate the grand opening of the final phase of ATB Centre – home of the Cor Van Raay YMCA.

This grand opening marks a first for Lethbridge by bringing together multiple leisure services in one location. The 380,000 square foot facility is built and owned by the City of Lethbridge with the newest phase being operated by the Lethbridge YMCA.

"The size of this building and the number of amenities it offers is impressive," says Lethbridge Mayor, Chris Spearman. "But what is even more impressive to me is how this space is already helping us build community. Families, friends and neighbours now have a place to gather, be active and enjoy each other's company. This is something our community needed and I'm excited to see that grow in the years to come."

With both phases of ATB Centre now complete, Lethbridge residents and visitors can access fitness, aquatics, curling and skating all under one roof. The total budget of $109.5 million for phase 2 and more than $150 million for the entire facility, ATB Centre represents the largest investment in a community facility in Lethbridge's history.

The Government of Alberta provided funding for both phases of the building including $18.8 million in Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding towards phase 2.

ATB Financial entered into a five-year naming sponsor agreement with the City of Lethbridge for September 2016 to August of 2021.

"ATB Financial is proud to be part of the grand opening of phase two of ATB Centre," says Tanya Kroeker, ATB Financial, Market Vice President, Alberta South. "Like ATB, this is a place that connects people, supporting them to achieve their goals. It's a place for people from all walks of life across Alberta to come together and pursue their passions for the greater good of our province. Congratulations on reaching this milestone, which will enrich the lives of Albertans."

After nearly three years of construction, the Cor Van Raay YMCA at ATB Centre opened its doors to the public on May 4, 2019, which is home to an aquatics centre including two waterslides, a surf simulator, climbing wall, lap pool, lazy river, tots spray area, whirlpool and zero depth entry gentle wave pool. Visitors can also enjoy using the gymnasiums, field house, indoor playground, fitness areas and running/walking track. In addition, the YMCA offers childcare services, child minding and programing in the youth room.

In the few short weeks that the Cor Van Raay YMCA has been operational, they have seen more than 65,000 visitors and have 5,300 members.

"We are ecstatic by the welcome Lethbridge has extended to our new facility and staff," says Jennifer Petracek-Kolb CEO of the YMCA of Lethbridge, "We have more than 160 new team members, able to work and play in this facility with many of them being young adults. We are very excited to work together to grow our services to Lethbridge and southern Alberta."

The Cor Van Raay YMCA at ATB Centre is open Mon - Fri from 5 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (pool and fitness floor close at 10 p.m.), Sat and Sun from 8 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. (pool and fitness floor close at 8 p.m.) and Stat Holidays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
