Marking 100 years of Fire Prevention Week

During Fire Prevention Week, October 9-15, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Service encourages residents to practice their fire escape plan.

This year also marks the 100-year anniversary of Fire Prevention Week. During Fire Prevention Week, adults and children alike learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. The hope is to drastically reduce casualties caused by fires.

This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign theme of "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape" has Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services encouraging all residents to develop a fire escape plan and to know two ways out of every room in their home. The recommendation is to practice your fire escape plan at least twice a year.

Today's homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.
