Neighbourhood Street Sweeping program to begin next week

The annual neighbourhood Street Sweeping program will start next week, weather permitting, with signs being placed commencing on April 11 and sweeping starting on April 12.

This year's campaign will begin with missed areas from 2021, including Tudor Estates, Scenic Heights, Chinook Heights and Park Royal. Sweepers will then head to the northside, starting in Hardieville, followed by the remainder of the southside, then on the westside. The area of the city where sweeping starts rotates annually.

Residents are encouraged to download the new and free Lethbridge Loop smartphone app to receive street sweeping notifications for their area. More information here.

Temporary NO PARKING signs will still be posted in a specific neighbourhood the day before street sweepers arrive. There will, again, be no paper door hanger reminders or windshield wiper notices.

Residents are asked to do their part and move their vehicle before 7:30 a.m. on street sweeping days. Parking tickets of $25 may be issued to vehicles that are not moved from the street.

Each spring, street sweeping crews clean thousands of tonnes of sand, dirt and other debris from approximately 580 kilometres of roads in Lethbridge. This helps to prevent that material from being washed into the Oldman River via our storm sewer system. It also reduces dust in neighbourhoods and makes streets safer for cycling, walking and driving. Street sweeping is scheduled so that it doesn't conflict with garbage pickup.

Sand and debris picked up by street sweepers gets stored and cleaned and the reconditioned sand is reused by mixing it into new sand for the following year's sanding operation. Residual waste material is disposed of in the landfill.

Additionally, night sweeping will begin on April 10 (weather permitting) for arterial roads and roads in the industrial area. Night sweeping will be going for approximately six to eight weeks from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. from Sundays to Thursdays to avoid impeding traffic during busier daytime hours.
