Don't let today's weather deter you – patio season is just around the corner.
In a continued effort to implement public realm enhancements in the urban core and to support businesses city-wide in their COVID-19 relaunch efforts, the City of Lethbridge is happy to announce its continuation of the successful outdoor patio and parklet program.
The program, which supports businesses in expanding outdoor seating opportunities, increase aesthetic appeal and attract more customers, was originally piloted in 2018 and gained a great deal of positive feedback from both business owners and the public during the last two years.
The program has gained attention from municipalities and business improvement districts across North America, many of which have utilized Lethbridge's program as a model to duplicate.
For any business interested in exploring outdoor seating options, a permit is required. However, a streamlined process is in place and a comprehensive handbook has also been created to assist. This resource includes operational and safety requirements, application form, and details on the review process. For more information visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/publicspaces.
Additionally, an incentive program is in place to further assist businesses. The program includes:
- Downtown: 50 per cent matching up to $5,000 for the design and construction of a major patio or parklet and/or a variety of street furniture infrastructure is available to be lent out by the City at no charge including a variety of bistro tables and chairs, stools, umbrellas and planters
- City-wide: 50 per cent matching up to $1,000 for costs including plants, planters, furnishings, barriers etc. for any patio or parklet
The City of Lethbridge is looking forward to continuing to find ways to work with businesses to support new opportunities.
