With the warmer weather and the desire for extra space outside to better physical distance, installing a patio or parklet may be a perfect way for businesses to greet the summer. The City of Lethbridge is excited to roll out this year's Outdoor Patio and Parklet Program to expedite permitting and provide technical support to businesses for expanded outdoor seating.
A permit is required for all outdoor seating and a comprehensive handbook has been created to guide what type of permit is required based on the various ways a businesses can expand their outdoor seating. This could including converting on-street parking stalls, streets, sidewalks and parking lots to patios. The handbook also includes operational and safety requirements and details on what's considered in the review process.
To support businesses in the establishment of expanded outdoor seating areas, the City of Lethbridge Patio and Parklet Support Program includes:
- 100 per cent of permit fees and charges associated with patios and outdoor seating being covered up to $1,000 per business (city-wide);
- Prefabricated parklet structures, planters, bistro tables and chairs that businesses may borrow at no cost (limited to Downtown and subject to availability); and
- The Urban Property Improvement Grant may be used to provide matching funding up to $5,000 to assist with initial costs of developing their own patio or parklet (limited to Downtown, Warehouse District, and 13th Street North).
While the number of permits are not limited, funding and infrastructure requests will be approved on a first come/first serve basis and are limited based on availability.
