Every road closure PSA we send out includes the message "Motorists are advised to drive with caution in this area and follow posted detours." There are reasons for this.
Dozens of workers and motorists in Alberta are injured or killed in construction zones every year, with many of the circumstances being completely preventable by slowing down and being more attentive. During the past several years, construction crews in Lethbridge have experienced many cases of drivers knowingly going through barricades, moving barricades, disrupting work crews and not following signage for detours. In several cases, crews have called police or reported license plates.
There can be traffic law implications, including:
- Doubled fines for drivers convicted of speeding through construction zones
- When workers are present, fines for speeding in construction zones are doubled as well
- Demerit points will also be applied to the driver's record if convicted, but will not be doubled.
We want to both drivers and workers as safe as possible so – please slow down! For the safety of all involved, we will be issuing ongoing reminders during the summer construction season and strongly encouraging the public to be acutely aware of work crews, barricades, lights, signs and detours. Please do not move barricades, even if you don't see a work crew.
As another reminder, road construction projects may impact other services such as transit or waste and recycling pickup. Please visit Lethbridge.ca for road construction updates. See the 2022 What's In The Works map here.
And, again – motorists are advised to drive with caution and follow posted detours. Further information is available at https://ama.ab.ca/articles/construction-zone-safety.
