Slides at four playgrounds being replaced due to recall

Twelve stainless steel slides are being replaced at three elementary schools and a public park due to a safety recall by the manufacturer. The affected playgrounds include:

  • Dr. Probe Elementary School (5 slides; 1 slide previously removed)
  • Galbraith Elementary School (3 slides)
  • Coalbanks Park (3 slides)
  • Mike Mountain Horse Elementary School (1 slide)

Lethbridge School District 51 has been notified about the recall. The slides are being removed, ground surfaces will be replaced if needed, and access to all affected slide openings will be blocked off by wooden panels to ensure the safety of playground users until new slides are installed. Signs will be placed on the barriers, advising the public of the recall as well. The playgrounds are managed and maintained by the City of Lethbridge, and this project is being completed by the City.

The manufacturer, Playworld Systems, identified a concern about faulty welding in the slide seam and will replace all affected slides free of charge. Due to the volume of slides recalled, the timeline for slide replacement is unknown at this point.

Safety is our number one priority. Parents are asked to talk to their children about the recall if they attend one of these schools.
