Update on re-opening recreation facilities and amenities

Each town and city in Alberta is approaching the opening of pools, spray parks and arenas differently based on the complexity of each situation. After reviewing the latest public health guidelines for each amenity and working with partner operators, the City is working toward the following opening dates unless there is a sudden change to anticipated public health guidelines.


The ATB Arena is scheduled to re-open Thursday, June 10 and will remain open for the summer. Community group bookings and private bookings can be made by email at or by calling 311.

Public skating at the ATB Arena will resume on Monday, June 14. The public skating schedule will be back online Friday, June 11 at where you can review the schedule and book a time slot.  Payment will be made when you enter the facility for your booked time.

Spray Parks

Although there has been a delayed start due to outside gathering limits in Stage 1 of Alberta's Open for Summer Plan, Gyro Spray park and Rotary Centennial Fountain are scheduled to open on Thursday, June 10.

Gyro Spray Park is located behind Nicholas Sheran Arena is free of charge for all visitors. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.

Rotary Centennial Fountain is located in Galt Gardens, on the corner of 3 Avenue South and 7 Street South. Use of this amenity is free of charge and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting.

Signage will be in place to indicate hours for use and washroom availability. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own hand sanitizer and maintain physical distancing from other users.


Pools and Recreation Centres

Pools managed by Recreation Excellence will re-open in a phased approach to provide time for staffing, training and adjustments required to meet Stage 2 provincial public health guidelines.

  • Stan Siwik Pool is scheduled to re-open on Thursday, June 10
  • Henderson Outdoor Pool is tentatively scheduled to open in late June

As demand for aquatics increases, re-opening dates for Nicholas Sheran Pool and Fritz Sick Pool will be announced.

Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and visit for updates and information about swim options at all pools managed by Recreation Excellence.

The public is encouraged to reach out to their community group or other facility operators about recreation opportunities and re-opening plans.
