Fire crews responded to a west Lethbridge apartment fire this morning just before 8:00 a.m. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the roof of the building located on West Highlands Blvd.
All four stations responded to the blaze that impacted 36 units in the complex. The fire was contained by 9:20 and fully extinguished just after 10:00 a.m. Crews remain on scene to manage any possible hot spots. One firefighter was taken to hospital for precautionary measures and is in stable condition.
All residents were safely evacuated to a nearby parking lot while they awaited emergency social services. The City, working with Alberta Health Services and Canadian Red Cross, managed supports for those on scene arranging medical needs, transportation, and lodging. Residents will be unable to return to the building due to heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. Anyone who evacuated and left the scene can connect with the Red Cross at 1-888-800-6493 for support.
The fire appears to have started on a second floor balcony and spread to the third floor and attic of the building. A fire investigation is underway into the cause. Anyone who may have captured early video of the fire is asked to contact the City's Fire Prevention Bureau at 403-320-3811 or email@example.com.
