Smoking materials need to be extinguished properly by placing the remnants in a container that does not burn or melt which contains either water or sand. When in use, barbecues should be a safe distance away from walls and fences, and materials such as cloth rags that have been used with organic stains need to be disposed of in a sealable metal container containing water.
