About the Project

This project is the construction of Scenic Drive North from 5th Avenue North to Stafford Drive North including:

  • New North to South connection
  • New Softball Valley access road
  • New Waste Water Treatment Plant access road
  • Pedestrian underpass (including mining artwork)
  • Pedestrian pathway connections

Project Updates

November 8, 2013 - Official Grand Opening held on November 8, 2013.  

October 25, 2013 - The road will be open to the public on October 30, 2013.

October 17, 2013 - All paving work is complete and the intersection of Scenic Drive and Stafford Drive is open, except for the Scenic Drive southwest bound traffic. The contractor is now focused on pathway construction and the Softball Valley access road. The goal is for the road to be opened to traffic on October 28. The Grand Opening ceremony is set for November 8.

August 30, 2013 - The intersection of Scenic Drive North and Stafford Drive North has reopened to motorists. The southbound Scenic Drive North leg leading to the new construction will remain closed.

July 17, 2013 - deGraaf continues to make good progress on the surface works contract. The installation of the pedestrian underpass artwork is ongoing. Crews are focused on building the Stafford Drive/Scenic Drive intersection. We expect this intersection to be re-opened by the end of August.

June 12, 2013 - As the City of Lethbridge moves to the next phase of the Scenic Drive North project, 9th Avenue North will reopen on June 14th.  On June 25th, the intersection of Stafford Drive/Scenic Drive North will close. The intersection is expected to reopen mid-August 2013.

April 12, 2013 - deGraaf continues to make good progress on the surface works contract. The shallow and deep utilities as well as the earthworks are all progressing. Work on the Scenic Drive/9th Avenue intersection is ongoing with 9th Avenue estimated to re-open mid June as scheduled. Work also continues on the WWTP and Softball Valley access roads.

March 4, 2013 - On March 11, 2013, there will be a full road closure where Scenic Drive turns into 9th Avenue North. This closure will allow for construction to Scenic Drive North that, once complete, will include a new North to South connection, new road and access to Softball Valley and an artwork-filled pedestrian underpass.

February 14, 2013 - Earthwork was completed on Friday, December 14. The contract for surface works has started. deGraaf Excavating, the successful bidder on this contract will complete the earthworks, then will move on to underground and shallow utility work, followed by surface work. Shallow utility work along the new Wastewater Treatment Plant access road is in progress.

November 13, 2012 The tender for paving and other surface work has been awarded to de Graf Excavating Limited of Lethbridge.

October 22, 2012 Major earth works is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2012.

June 22, 2012 The City of Lethbridge started construction on the extension of Scenic Drive North. This new roadway will reduce traffic along Stafford Drive North and 9th Avenue and offer better access to recent developments north of 26 Avenue North. It is expected to be complete in September 2013.

June 29, 2012 The City hosted a sod turning event with political dignitaries to celebrate the beginning of construction.  


The Contractor (Richardsons) is currently filling in the deep, deep, deep coulees.
