Bridge Drive is scheduled to reopen at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26th, 2012.
The project was completed in two phases, underground works and road reconstruction. The phasing allowed the project to be completed more quickly, saving approximately 6 to 8 months over traditional delivery methods.
The first phase, underground works, installed a water line and two sanitary sewer lines across the Oldman River. The budget was $18.6 million but came in $1.7 million under budget and 2 months ahead of schedule. The project engineer was MPE Engineering and the contractor was Whissel Contracting Calgary Ltd. This portion of the project was fully funded by the City of Lethbridge through Offsite Levies which are collected from land developers as growth occurs.
The second phase of the project was the reconstruction of the Bridge Drive roadway. The road reconstruction included the installation of a pedestrian pathway and improvements to the drainage system. The budget amount for this portion of the work was $5.2 million and was completed $1.5 million under budget. The project engineer was Associated Engineering and the contractor was Tollestrup Construction (2005) Inc. The funding for this work came from the Alberta Municipal Infrastructure Program (AMIP) and the City of Lethbridge (Offsite Levies).
On November 30th, the contractor reached the half way point in completing the underground portion of this project. Horizontal drilling and installation of the water fill line under the river has been completed and the drilling contractor is now working on the first of two sanitary sewer crossings under the river. The majority of pipe fusing and laying operations along Bridge Drive have also been completed.
At the same time, design work for the restoration of the Bridge Drive Roadway and the Storm Water Management System is proceeding.
The parking lot beside the river, just off Highway 3 is also closed as part of the Bridge Drive Utility Corridor Project. This closure is to allow for the drilling of a new water line across the Oldman River.
The parking lot will be reopened as a gravel surface in January 2012 and will be repaved when the weather allows in the spring of 2012.
On August 20th, 2011 Bridge Drive construction began. This road has been partially closed to allow for upgrades that include a new water line, sanitary sewer, storm water system and resurfacing. During the road reconstruction, the drainage system will be improved to prevent erosion issues that have closed the road several times.
The main purpose of this project is to install a new water line and two sanitary sewer lines. Bridge Drive will be dug up to install the new pipelines.
The upgrades add infrastructure capacity for the continued expansion and development of West Lethbridge. In the future, West Lethbridge will host an employment centre as well as future business and residential development.
Funding for this project comes from Offsite Levies and it is not tax funded.
Weather permitting, Bridge Drive will completely reopen after rebuilding and road paving in the fall of 2012.
Other travel options are Whoop-Up Drive or Highway 3. The City of Lethbridge thanks residents in advance for their cooperation during this construction project.
All businesses will remain open during their regular business schedules including:
- Bridgeview RV Resort
- Bridge Valley Golf Course
- Nord International Inc.
- Willow Creek Sand & Gravel Co. Ltd.
