Chinook Substation Development
About the Project
This project is the construction of a new Electric Substation in west Lethbridge.
The purpose of this project is to provide a long term reliable supply of electrical energy to the north section of west Lethbridge. In addition, the new transmission facilities will provide a back up supply of electrical energy to the south section of West, North, and South Lethbridge during contingency events on the electrical utility system.
A 2.8 km section of 138 kV transmission line will be built to connect to the Alberta Integrated Electric System (AIES). Interconnection to the AIES will be made 800 m north and west of the city limits to an existing transmission line owned by Altalink. The transmission line will terminate at a new transmission substation (181S Chinook) which will be located immediately west of the Archmount Cemetery.
The 181S Chinook substation will transform the electrical energy from 138 kV (transmission voltage level) to 13.8 kV (distribution voltage level) to allow the City of Lethbridge distribution system to connect growing customer electrical load in the north section of West Lethbridge.
