Project Description
This project is the replacement of all streetlight luminaires in Lethbridge with power efficient LED fixtures. This change is expected to have a 50 per cent savings in power consumption. LEDs are energy efficient and have longer lifespans than high pressure sodium luminaires that the City of Lethbridge uses today. LEDs have an expected lifespan of 20 years without a significant reduction in light levels, while current bulbs have lifespans of five years, if they haven't burned out by then.
By the end of April 2013, South Lethbridge (Phase 1) will have 4,500 new LED fixtures. Crews will then replace the luminaires in North and West Lethbridge (Phase 2) in the Fall of 2013 and then the decorative fixtures in the downtown core (Phase 3). This project will be completed by Spring 2014 and will see all 11,000 luminaires in Lethbridge replaced.
Residents will notice a difference once the lights have been replaced. Lights will appear brighter and whiter.
Project Updates
February 13, 2014 - Phase 3 of the project is scheduled to start on February 18. Luminaires not changed in Phase 2 will be completed with Phase 3. Phase 3 is the final stretch of the project which includes the decorative lights in the downtown core. The work should last approximately 3 weeks.
November 19, 2013 - The LED replacement program for North and West Lethbridge is nearing completion. It is anticipated that by November 21st that most of the job will be complete. There will be lights along 5th Ave. North that will be completed with Phase 3. Phase 3 includes the decorative lighting in Downtown Lethbridge. Delivery of the remaining LED fixtures is expected by mid-January with construction for the remaining lights of Phase 2 and Phase 3 to start the first of February.
October 15, 2013 - Installation of LED fixtures in North Lethbridge is 75% complete and crews have begun installing fixtures in west Lethbridge.
September 17, 2013 - The LED replacement program is scheduled to resume September 18th. The project will see LED fixtures being installed in North and West Lethbridge. Crews will start in North Lethbridge and move to West Lethbridge. This part of the project is expected to be complete by December 2013.
July 17, 2013 - Phase 2 of the LED replacement program is scheduled to start September 15 and finish December 30, 2013. Phase 2 includes cobra and post top style heads for North and West Lethbridge. Phase 3 includes the decorative lighting in the downtown core and is scheduled for spring of 2014. Leotek has been awarded the supply contract of phase 2 for LED cobra head style luminaires. Eecol Electric has been awarded the supply contract of phase 2 for LED post top style luminaires. The installation RFQ has been issued and closes July 18, 2013.
May 15, 2013 - Phase 1 (South Lethbridge) of the LED replacement program is complete. Approximately 4,500 fixtures where replaced in south Lethbridge. The RFP for the purchase of luminaires for Phase 2 closes May 16. Construction for Phase 2 is anticipated to start in the fall with a completion date of December 2013. Phase 3 (downtown decorative) will be scheduled early 2014.
April 12, 2013 - The first stage (replacement on the south side) of the LED replacement program is approximately 70% complete. Completion is still scheduled for the end of April. Work is underway on stage 2 of the project. Stage 2 will see the purchase of LED fixtures and retrofit of lights in the north and west sides of Lethbridge. It is anticipated that the purchase Request for Proposal (RFP) phase should be completed in 6 to 8 wks. The construction RFP will go out later this summer with a completion schedule of later this year. Stage 3 of the project will include the retrofit of decorative lighting in the downtown core. This is scheduled for no later than the spring of 2014.
