Parkside Drive Sanitary and Stormwater Sewer Upgrades

Current Status Complete
Timeline 2013 - 2014
Location Parkside Drive South across from the Exhibition Grounds (Map)

About the Project

Currently public utilities (sanitary and stormwater sewer) run through the property known as the Lethbridge Exhibition Grounds.  This project will realign the utilities off of this site and place them within the public right of way along Parkside Drive South.  Moving these utilities will allow for the future re-development of this property.

One section of the existing sanitary sewer main is especially problematic for maintenance.  New infrastructure will eliminate these sections of main which require frequent maintenance.

The scope of work for this contract will consist of the following:

  1. Detailed design of both storm and sanitary mains to be located in Parkside Drive which will divert wastewater and stormwater from flowing through the Exhibition Grounds site.
  2. Contract and construction administration and engineering services during construction of the new sewer mains.

Project Updates

July 23, 2014 – The Parkside Drive Sanitary and Stormwater Upgrade project is now substantially complete and open to the public. All detour signs have been taken down and both Exhibition entrances are operational. The sewer upgrades have improved the storm water drainage on Parkside Dr., eliminated troublesome sanitary pipes and helped enable the future re-development of exhibition grounds.

Please use caution on the roadway if construction workers are in the area. There will be some small close out tasks (landscaping, sign installation, etc.) taking place in the boulevards for the next week.

July 7, 2014 - The new sanitary and storm pipelines have now been connected. The intersection at Parkside Drive South and 34th Street South will remain closed for approximately 2 weeks to complete the surface restoration and catch basin installations. Motorist can access the Exhibition Grounds through the entrance in front of the Grand Stands during this time.

The pedestrian crosswalk located outside the gates at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club entrance will also be upgraded during this time. The pathway will be lowered to allow proper grading for pedestrian and handicap access.

June 26, 2014 - Parkside Drive South is open for traffic and pedestrians. The northern intersection and entrance to Exhibition Grounds will be closed starting July 2nd to complete the final phase of the project. The pathways will remain open during the final phase, as will south bound traffic. It is estimated this final phase will take 4-6 weeks, weather permitting.

June 17, 2014 - Installation of pipe within Parkside Drive is now complete and subgrade preparation for the roadway has begun. Weather pending, the goal is to have all surface works complete by the Dragon Boat and Canada Day festivals. All public roadway detours will remain in place until this time. Work in the intersection of Parkside Drive & 34th Street South will begin later in the summer/fall when all major events in the area are complete and the intersection be shut down with minimal impact.

February 13, 2014 - Construction on this project is set to resume March 15. Detours around the incomplete work will remain in place until the road surface has been built.

November 19, 2013 - Deep utility construction in phase 1 is complete. Parkside Drive from South Parkside Drive to the south Exhibition Park entrance is paved and will be opened imminently. Unfortunately, Parkside Drive will be not be re-opened for the winter as anticipated as the weather became a limiting factor in getting the road surface finished. The contractor will return to the site to complete Phase 2 of the project in the spring.

October 18, 2013 - The construction contract was awarded to GW Cox Construction. Deep utility construction in phase 1 is complete with road restoration remaining. Parkside Drive will be re-opened for the winter and then closed again in the spring to complete Phase 2 of the project.

September 16, 2013 - Construction set to begin the week of September 16th.
