Propane Tanks and Bottles

Please DO NOT put propane tanks in your blue or black cart! Propane tanks are very dangerous if disposed of improperly. Garbage trucks crush the material from our garbage carts to save space. When the truck compresses a propane or helium tank, or if they are run over by heavy equipment at the landfill, these tanks can explode, cause fires and seriously harm City staff.  Find out how to safely dispose of propane tanks below.

What's the best option for managing my propane tanks and bottles?

Reduce

Check appliances to ensure they are hooked up to propane tanks properly to prevent wasteful and dangerous propane leaks.

Reuse

Look into reusable propane tanks or bottles that can be refilled at many convenient locations.

Recycle

There is a special area for collection of this item at the Waste and Recycling Centre - please ask scale house operator for directions on site. For more information on Household Hazardous materials like propane tanks, click here.

Disposal

Please take to the Waste Recycling Centre and not in your blue or black cart.
