About the Study
The City of Lethbridge is conducting a functional planning study for Mayor Magrath Drive from 6th Avenue South to 5th Avenue North. The primary objective of this study is to develop a long term functional plan, for this important north-south arterial roadway, in order to accommodate future growth for modes of travel.
A number of options will be developed and evaluated during the study. Lethbridge residents and businesses will have opportunities to provide input throughout the study process which is expected to run from 2015 - 2016.
Background
- Mayor Magrath Drive is a major arterial road connecting the residential and industrial areas of north Lethbridge to south Lethbridge.
- Portions of this roadway have experienced congestion raising safety concerns.
- This study will determine possible future upgrades to accommodate road users as the city grows to a population of 130,000.
- The Study will also recommend opportunities to incorporate transit, cyclists and pedestrians on this roadway, compatible with the principles and objectives of both the Transportation Master Plan and the Pathways Master Plan.
What's in the Study
The objectives of the study are as follows:
- Assess existing traffic conditions including current traffic operations and safety
- Prepare functional plans for staged development to accommodate anticipated traffic demands for both interim (110,000) population and long term (130,000 population) planning horizons
- Develop alternatives and recommend opportunities to accommodate a variety of transportation modes
- Identify a recommended implementation strategy and schedule
