Christmas Tree Collection Postponed due to weather

Due to the extreme cold weather forecast, the City of Lethbridge in partnership with this year’s volunteer group, Senator Buchanan Elementary School, have made the decision to postpone the Christmas Tree Collection that was scheduled to start this Saturday. The collection will now take place the following weekend, Saturday, January 20, 2024.

For the past 30 years the City of Lethbridge and local youth groups have partnered to ensure that Christmas trees continue to give after the Holiday Season. More than 1.5 million kilograms or approximately 95,000 Christmas trees have been diverted from the landfill since the program began.

We want to remind all residents their trees need to be placed by 7 a.m. on the day of the collection. They should be in your alley or front of house, based on where your garbage is collected. The fundraising youth groups follow maps based on that information.

All decorations, tinsel, plastic and tree stands need to be removed. The trees must be totally bare to be ready for the chipper. We instruct the fundraising groups to leave these trees so they do not damage the equipment.

Lastly, sometimes human error (missed trees) happen. While the youth groups do their best to be thorough, we also recognize they're not professional operations crews. Residents can reach out to 311 if this occurs.
