City says bye-bye-bye to weekly green cart collection for the season

The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents to reduce the rollout of their green cart to every other week until the spring.

Residents who have a green cart can expect to see it collected every other week starting this week, November 7. The seasonal approach to collection accounts for variations in yard waste generation and addresses the “yuck” or odour factor experienced during the warmer months with household organics.

If remembering which cart you need to place out for collection each week is a struggle, the City has an app for that. The Lethbridge Loop app takes the guesswork out of which cart you have to set out on your collection days in addition to reminders about other planned City services like snow route declarations, street sweeping and planned power outages.

The app is free to download for both Apple and Android devices and offers residents the opportunity to receive alerts about planned services that may affect their home and neighbourhood. The app will send a reminder directly to your phone indicating which cart needs to be set out on collection day.

For those residents who would like to learn more about the Lethbridge Loop app, the City will have a pop-up booth at the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) this week.

When:    11 a.m.-2p.m. on Thursday, November 9

Where:  Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO)

               500 11 St S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4G7

City staff will be available with giveaways, information and assistance to help equip residents with the free smartphone tool.

Residents can also use the Waste Wizard at lethbridge.ca/curbside to confirm their cart collection schedule or they can connect with the friendly team at 311 from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Roughly 85 per cent of residents have been participating in the green cart program since it was rolled out to curbsides six months ago. Estimated diversion data shows more than 4,000 tonnes of organic waste has been diverted from the landfill thanks to green carts in the first six months of the curbside organics program. This averages out to approximately 120 kgs of waste, per household.
