Exploring options to expand air travel opportunities

The City of Lethbridge is taking strategic steps to enhance air service at the Lethbridge Airport (YQL). The goal is to improve regional connectivity, support economic growth and make air travel more convenient for residents, businesses and the region.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, the City is exploring options to support expanded flight availability and better serve regional travel needs. These options vary in cost, complexity and risk, and will be evaluated using detailed origin and destination travel data, which is currently being collected.

“With the direction of the aviation industry post-pandemic becoming clear, we believe it’s the right time to take a comprehensive look at the data, utilizing the latest technology to analyze current travel patterns,” says Cameron Prince, Airport Manager. “By leading with data and a collaborative approach, we can help Council make informed decisions that strengthen our ability to improve air service at YQL.”

Airlines make decisions based on data, demand and risk, relying on metrics like passenger volume, cost-per-seat and travel patterns. The origin and destination travel data will be critical in identifying viable routes and service models.

Beyond passenger travel, YQL supports essential services such as medevac flights, flight training and private aviation. Adding more flight options at YQL reduces the need for long drives to other airports. It also supports economic growth and creates more opportunities for tourism and business.

Loss of air service, shifting airline priorities and new regulatory requirements have all impacted the industry. Rebuilding reliable service at YQL is essential to restoring traveler confidence and regional air access.

A coordinated regional strategy will further strengthen Lethbridge’s position when negotiating with airlines and advocating for improved service. The City will actively engage with key regional stakeholders to better understand travel demand and identify shared priorities.  The origin and destination travel data collection process is expected to be completed before the end of the year and will allow the airport to move forward on its strategy.
