Put your waste in the right place!

New year, new waste habits! With 2023 right around the corner, we are reminding residents to dispose of waste materials in the correct and safest way possible.

Hazardous materials can pose a risk to the City's Waste & Recycling Centre staff as well as our Waste Collection Operators. Please keep the following items out of your black cart and dispose of them at the Hazardous Household Waste and Electronic drop-off at the Waste & Recycling Centre:

  • Batteries
  • Propane tanks
  • Compressed gas cylinders
  • Electronics
  • Motor oil

This is also a reminder to avoid wish-cycling, which is the practice of tossing questionable items in your blue cart hoping they can be recycled. The folks working at the City's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) are responsible for sorting the items placed in resident's blue carts and those collected at the City's Recycling Stations. We want to ensure the workers aren't hurt and equipment isn't damaged. Please keep the following items out of your blue cart:

  • Glass
  • Needles
  • Helium tanks
  • Animal carcasses
  • Ammunition
  • Garbage bags with solid waste
  • Yard waste

Additionally, leftover Christmas items such as wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and Styrofoam are not accepted in the blue cart and should be placed in your black cart.

If you are unsure about how to dispose of an item, you can contact 311 or use the waste wizard at lethbridge.ca/waste-wizard. For more information on putting your waste in the right place, visit: https://curbside.lethbridge.ca/.
