2026 Provincial Referendum Signage

Who administers the referendum?

A provincial referendum administered by Elections Alberta is taking place on Monday, October 19, 2026. The advance vote is taking place October 13-17. Elections Alberta is responsible for administering the referendum, including establishing requirements and guidelines related to referendum signage.

What the City of Lethbridge regulates

Recent changes to Alberta legislation have limited the ability of municipalities to regulate provincial election and referendum signage through municipal bylaws. As a result, the City of Lethbridge does not regulate referendum signs or referendum advertising, including their content, size or placement.

Questions, inquiries or complaints regarding referendum signage should be directed to Elections Alberta.

Signs beside roadways

Referendum signs are allowed on road rights-of-way. Signs must not block intersection sightlines, cover traffic signs, or create hazards for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. If there are concerns related to transportation safety due to their placement, signs may be removed by Transportation.

Signs on private property

Signs placed on private property require permission from the property owner.

Signs on City property

The City supports the democratic and legislative process associated with the Alberta Referendum and recognizes the importance of providing opportunities for public expression and engagement. However, the City reserves the right to review and remove referendum signs on City property. The City will exercise this discretion in a fair, reasonable and consistent manner while supporting the public’s ability to engage in the referendum process.

Transportation and public safety

The City of Lethbridge may act if a referendum sign creates a transportation safety concern. Transportation safety concerns can be reported through 311.

Content of signs

If you have questions related to the content of referendum signs, please contact Elections Alberta or the contact number on the sign itself.

Removal of referendum signs

Referendum signs are the responsibility of the campaign or organization that placed them. Following the referendum, signs should be removed by the responsible campaign or organization within three days after voting day per Provincial legislation. The City of Lethbridge is not responsible for removing referendum campaign signs.

If a referendum sign remains in place after the removal deadline (October 22), or if you have questions or concerns about referendum signage, please contact Elections Alberta at 1-877-422-8683 (VOTE).
