Barbecue fire damages vehicle and north Lethbridge home

Quick action by residents and responding crews helped prevent a barbecue fire from causing more extensive damage to a north Lethbridge mobile home.
Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) responded to reports of a propane tank explosion at 2300 13 Street North at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 9.
Upon arrival, crews found a barbecue fire that had spread to a nearby vehicle and the exterior of a mobile home. Twenty-two firefighters from four stations responded.
Members of the household quickly called 9-1-1. Crews extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading further. One occupant was assessed by EMS at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As summer grilling season continues, LFES reminds residents to:
- Clean barbecue grills regularly and remove grease or fat buildup from the trays below the grill.
- Place barbecues well away from siding, deck railing and other combustible materials.
- Never operate a barbecue beneath eaves, overhangs or tree branches.
- Inspect propane hoses, tanks and connections for damage or leaks before each use.
- Never leave a lit barbecue unattended.
Keep children and pets away from the barbecue. When finished grilling, turn off the propane supply first, then turn off the barbecue control knobs to help clear the propane line.
