Bridge rehabilitation work shifts lanes on Whoop-Up Drive

Safety and traffic flow remain the focus as the Whoop-Up Drive bridge rehabilitation project continues.

Last week’s concrete pour, for the bridge’s expansion joints, was successful. Rehabilitation work is now moving to the outside westbound lane. Beginning in the afternoon of September 2, westbound motorists will use the middle lane to cross the bridge. Ongoing inspections confirm this change is safe.

Inspections also show the girder under the inside westbound lane is more damaged than first thought. The damage happened on August 6, when a privately owned and operated flatbed trailer carrying heavy equipment struck the underside of the bridge. Repair plans are progressing. Additional engineering work will confirm the exact size of the damaged areas on the two most affected girders.

The damage is part of the reason peak hour lane changes will continue into early October.

“We explored an alternative that would have allowed two westbound lanes to remain open full-time,” says Jason Drenth, Acting Director of Infrastructure Services. “Expert review confirmed this plan means fewer delays today and down the road. It’s also the best approach to maintain safety for motorists and workers. We recognize how frustrating this has been for commuters. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through it.”

The peak hour lane changes have resulted in improved traffic flow and fewer collisions on Whoop-Up Drive. As summer vacation ends and post-secondary students return to classes, we ask for continued vigilance on all local roadways.

The restriction on heavy load trucks - excluding standard pickup trucks - continues to apply for westbound traffic on Whoop-Up Drive. Until further notice, all heavy load vehicles are required to detour via Highway 3.
