Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as clocks spring forward

Time change means safety check!
Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) is reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as clocks spring forward this weekend.
Smoke alarms provide early warnings in the event of a fire. Carbon monoxide alarms detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, an invisible, odourless gas that can quickly become deadly.
LFES encourages residents to take a few minutes this weekend to:
- Test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms using the test button.
- Replace batteries annually or if the alarm chirps.
- Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home, in every bedroom and outside sleeping areas.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Families should also make sure everyone in the home recognizes the sound of the alarms and knows what to do if one activates.
If an alarm sounds, get outside immediately and call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Never ignore or disable an alarm.
