City Council continues snow and ice pilot program for another year

As the first official day of summer is rapidly approaching, there is no snow currently in the forecast. But planning has already commenced for next winter.

At its regular meeting today, Lethbridge City Council voted to continue for another year with a pilot program where snow and ice will be plowed to the right and where a subscription-based windrow assistance service will be offered.

“Adding another winter season to this pilot program will provide the next Council with further data and resident feedback to help determine the future of snow and ice control in Lethbridge,” says Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “We know it is an important topic for people, so we want to ensure that the next Council is well prepared to make the best decision moving forward.”

The windrow subscription program is open to residents who live along the snow route network and experience mobility challenges clearing snow from their property.

“There was only one snow event last winter that warranted a snow route declaration and plowing to the right, so adding another year to the pilot program will provide us with opportunities to see if the subscription-based windrow opening service is a tool that can better help residents navigate challenges,” says Juliane Ruck, Transportation Operations Manager.

Following the 2025/26 winter season, City Administration will give residents the opportunity to provide program feedback and report back to the Governance SPC on the results of the overall four-year trial of Snow and Ice Control Services Level Changes.

Further background, including feedback from previous survey results, can be found on the Snow Control Service Level Changes page on Get Involved Lethbridge
