City Council returning to Community Issues Committee structure
With a planned re-introduction of the Community Issues Committee (CIC) now confirmed, Lethbridge City Council’s committee meeting and governance structure is set for changes this year.
On Tuesday, Council voted 7-2 to adopt second and third readings for Bylaw 6518 – Procedure Bylaw Amendment, which will remove the five types of Standing Policy Committees (SPCs) and replace them with a single CIC.
A transition period will begin February 19 and continue through to the end of April, with some remaining Thursday dates being used to complete existing committee items. The new Tuesday meeting schedule rotation will start in May. See the updated meeting calendar here.
Tuesday’s decision follows a December 16 motion co-sponsored by Councillors Al Beeber, Rajko Dodic and Ryan Parker, along with Mayor Blaine Hyggen, to move to Community Issues Committee.
The primary intent is designed to provide focused oversight, policy review and recommendations, along with further transparency and more public participation.
