City Council seeking feedback on future Assessment and Taxation notices
The City of Lethbridge is exploring ways to make Assessment & Taxation notices more transparent, clearer to read and easier to use.
We’re asking residents for feedback on how well the current notices explain their Assessment and Taxes and what changes would make them easier to understand. City Council has tasked City Administration to prepare a report that would include whether residents would prefer separate notices for Municipal and Provincial taxes, potentially beginning with the 2027 Tax Year.
“We want to reach out to our residents to gauge their thoughts on what options may exist for better clarity and understanding regarding their property Assessment and Taxation notices,” says Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “This engagement responds to Council’s direction to explore options and before making any updates, we want to hear from the community. Thanks to Councillor Dodic for bringing this transparency initiative to Council.”
Residents can participate by:
- Completing the online survey
- Visiting us at the Community Conversation, Thursday, January 29, 2026, 3-7 p.m. at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, to view sample notice concepts and provide feedback in person
“Property assessment and taxation notices provide important information about how a property’s assessed value is determined and how municipal taxes are calculated,” says Amy Wehlage, Acting Manager of Assessment & Taxation.
Through this engagement, the City aims to:
- Understand how clearly residents can interpret their current Assessment & Taxation notices
- Identify which sections need more explanation or visual support
- Explore resident preferences for enhancements (such as comparison graphs and data from previous years)
- Gauge willingness to support improvements that involve costs
- Gather ideas and suggestions directly from taxpayers
- Assess whether separate tax notices would help residents understand the Municipal versus Provincial portion
The online survey will be open until Friday, February 6.
